Access to both is by boat, commonly \u201cbanana boat\u201d \u2013 open 23-26ft (7-8 metre) boats powered by 40-60hp outboard motors. From the base of the famous Rabaul Volcano, Mt. The first H.Q. was established in the New Guinea Club Building. It was occupied by the Japanese Navy until late 1943. Rabaul Hot Springs is situated nearby the volcano Rabalanakaia and the peak Tavurvur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bitapaka War Cemetery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"229\" src=\"https:\/\/rabaulscenictours.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bitapaka-cemetery-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rabaulscenictours.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bitapaka-cemetery-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rabaulscenictours.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/bitapaka-cemetery-1-79x60.jpg 79w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Situated south of the Township of Kokopo, Gazelle Peninsula in East New Britain Province. This cemetery is for the soldiers from the Australian capture of the German headquarters during World War One (1914). The cemetery holds over 1,000 allied soldiers, including Australians, Papuans, British, and colonial Indian troops who died in the struggle with the Japanese.
