Matupit is known for its deep-rooted cultural practices, especially the Tumbuan Society, which plays a vital role in community life. Tumbuan events are significant cultural gatherings where relatives unite to celebrate and honor tradition.
Key ceremonies include:
- Shell Money Breaking
- Initiation of New Members into the Tumbuan Secret Society

These ceremonies are sacred, symbolic, and central to our identity.
Our Land – Built with Determination
Matupit Village was originally established on island land between 1800 and 1959. In 1971, the community came together to shape the village you see today. Using large stones, the villagers built foundations and connected roads—paving the way for vehicle access and modern transport to nearby Rabaul town.
Language – United by Kuanua
Our people speak Kuanua, the common language shared among many villages in the region. It is a cornerstone of our communication, unity, and heritage.
Religion – Faith and Community
Matupit Island is home to three main Christian denominations, reflecting the islanders’ strong spiritual values and sense of community.
